Investing in women’s economic opportunities creates a ripple effect of prosperity for entire communities. In the face of the triple planetary crisis, empowering women is not just a moral imperative; it’s essential for achieving sustainable development goals and building resilient communities.
WOTR, with support from HSBC, is turning this vision into reality in rural Maharashtra. Through the ‘Promoting Entrepreneurship, Employment Opportunities, and Increased Incomes in Maharashtra’ programme, WOTR is equipping over 120 women-led self-help groups in Ahmednagar district with the tools they need to launch their own businesses. This includes providing seed capital, training, and exposure visits, paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.
This film follows stories of women who have been partners in the success of the programme. With the programme reaching over 1,705 women across 20 villages of Maharashtra, these women have now increased their annual incomes by 40%. For instance, Jijabai Sahebrao Sonawne, has transformed her life from being a daily wage labourer to a successful business owner.
These stories are an ode to the many women who have turned the tide on financial constraints and societal restrictions. And are driving catalytic change in their lives, homes, and communities. With renewed confidence and mental resilience, these women are paving the way for a brighter more sustainable future!
